An SIA process typically involves the analysis, monitoring, and management of intended and unintended social consequences of planned interventions (policies, programs, plans, projects). It is essentially an iterative process. The motivation for implementing an SIA can vary from being a legal and regulatory obligation to a process that companies undertake voluntarily to obtain the 'social license to operate'. The International Financial Corporation (IFC) was the first global institution to develop formal SIA standards (Sustainability Framework). The Sustainability Framework includes environmental and social Performance Standards (PSs) that define its clients' responsibilities for managing the environmental and social risks of projects that the IFC is investing in. Many SIA standards created later follow the IFC model. Generally, more jurisdictions consider SIA and EIA as integrated activities, most effectively implemented as an ESIA process that continues throughout the project lifecycle rather than as a one-off activity.
