This work is written to review, renew, and recapture the awe and wonder of flight, both within the atmosphere and out into space. It is partially based on the contents of a course offered as a technical elective at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. More than that, however, it is founded on my love of flight as a passion and dedication. The manuscript is occasionally presented in interview (or question and answer) format, often about controversial topics, to emphasize that the opinions expressed are my own and to foster discussion among the readers. Part 1 of this work covers atmospheric flight, and Part 2 in a separate publication covers spaceflight. Three themes apply to both parts: (1) No Risk, No Reward; (2) Technical Progress May Not Be Ethical Progress; and (3) Ordinary Individuals Often Do Extraordinary Things. Along the way, four “How does it work?” technical questions are addressed: (1) How do aircraft fly? (2) How do rockets work? (3) How are aircraft and rockets guided and controlled? and (4) How do satellites (and, incidentally, cell phones) work? I provide my best opinions and answers to the three themes and four technical questions, and I encourage readers to challenge and improve them with their own thoughts, reasons, and research.
