Trigonometry is a branch of applied mathematics which develops its own, powerful methods and techniques, for calculating angles and distances, a problem of great practical importance. Even though trigonometry is often introduced as the study of triangles, its applications span a wide range of disciplines, such as physics, engineering, surveying, astronomy, etc. This text starts with the "old-fashioned" right triangle approach to the trigonometry, which is more intuitive for students to grasp. In this approach the six fundamental trigonometric numbers of an acute angle x , i.e. the sine of x (sinx), the cosine of x (cosx), the tangent of x (tanx), the cotangent of x (cotx), the secant of x (secx) and the cosecant of x (cscx), are properly defined as ratios of the sides of a right-angled triangle. Some simple, but fundamental trigonometric identities follow directly from these definitions. The three important laws, i.e. the law of sines, the law of cosines and the law of tangents are stated and proved, and are subsequently used in order to solve any oblique triangle and find useful relations between the sides and the trigonometric numbers of the angles of any triangle. In the second part of the book the notion of the angle is generalized. An angle now is treated as a real number, negative, zero or positive, extending from minus infinity up to plus infinity. Using the trigonometric circle, the trigonometric numbers of a general angle x, are defined. The periodic nature of the trigonometric functions emerges now naturally, directly from their definition on the trigonometric circle. The very important addition and subtraction formulas, the double angle formulas, the sum - product and the product-sum formulas are derived, and various useful applications of these formulas are considered. The final chapters of the book are devoted to the inverse trigonometric functions and to the solution of trigonometric equations and systems, a subject of great practical importance. The book contains 162 solved, illustrative examples and 575 problems for solution. Answers are provided for the odd numbered problems. For an easy access, a summary of all important trigonometric formulas is presented at the beginning of the book.
