This book was written for people who are hurting—especially those who find themselves wounded within the world of dentistry, or those who stand just outside it and watch that world closely.It was not written simply to offer comfort. Its purpose is to ask a harder question: how can people understand and overcome the difficulties that cause such pain? To explore that question, the book draws on the knowledge and wisdom that different disciplines have accumulated over time.Dental schools do not usually teach these subjects in any systematic depth. Part of the reason is practical. Dental curricula are already crowded, leaving little room for areas that do not fit neatly within the traditional biomedical and clinical sciences. But there is another reason as well: there are still relatively few educators in dentistry who have studied these fields deeply or received formal training in them. As a result, many dentists graduate with extensive knowledge of oral disease and treatment, yet with surprisingly little formal preparation for understanding people.Psychology provides the main foundation of this book, but it is not a book of psychology alone. It also draws on a range of perspectives from the humanities and social sciences in an effort to understand human beings more fully—their emotions, behavior, relationships, choices, suffering, and the social environments in which they live and work.Of course, no single book, especially a modest one such as this, can claim to explain the human person. This book is meant only as a beginning.My hope is that it will encourage dentists to look beyond oral health: to understand the human beings who come to them for care, to understand the people with whom they work, and perhaps most importantly, to understand themselves. In doing so, dentists may become not only professionals who treat oral disease, but also people who are better able to care for others—and for themselves.
