PULSED! Waiting for the Fire Demonis a nonfiction examination of how geomagnetic storms from the sun and high-altitude nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) threaten the U.S. electric grid and the systems that depend on it. It is written for general readers, and the foreword is by economist and infrastructure policy analyst Pat Choate. The book opens with a fictional account of an ordinary household on the first morning of a large-scale blackout. It then traces the effects of a long power outage on water, transportation, communications, health care, and food supply. Later chapters explain the solar physics of sunspots, flares, and coronal mass ejections, and the three components of a nuclear EMP. The historical record is reviewed, including the 1859 Carrington Event, the 1962 Starfish Prime test, the 1989 Hydro-Québec collapse, and the May 2024 Gannon storm. The author describes how the electric power and telecommunications systems are organized, and summarizes federal studies, commissions, legislation, and cost estimates for protecting them. A conceptual chapter explores hardening and recovery measures through a fictional city's emergency program. The final chapter addresses citizen involvement.Appendix A gives the full text of Executive Order 13865 (2019) on electromagnetic pulse resilience. The book includes 15 figures and 93 source notes.
